Niwot Cemetery, located on Nimbus road just west of 73rd Street, was established officially in 1884 when Jay Gould, owner of the land it occupies, deeded it to the town. For 150 years it has become the final resting place of hundreds of Niwot residents.
The cemetery is administered today by the Niwot Cemetery Association, a board of local volunteers. It is an unmaintained cemetery; summertime mowing is the only regular upkeep that we perform.
The cemetery has a limited number of plots available. The bylaws of the cemetery state that plots may be purchased by "persons who have resided in the Niwot community and the vicinity thereof for 20 years or more, or who have family members buried in the cemetery." At present (2025) the cost of a single plot in Niwot Cemetery is $2000. Purchase of a cemetery plot conveys interment rights; it is not a conveyance of real estate. Qualified parties who are interested in obtaining a plot may contact the Association as noted below.
If you currently own a plot in Niwot Cemetery and wish to open a grave for a burial, please contact the Association. Full casket burials and placement of headstones require notification to the Association if equipment is to be used for digging. We do not provide services for open and closing graves but we may be able to put in touch with someone who can do the work, at your expense.
If you are burying an urn of cremains it is a good idea to contact the Association as well so that we can ensure that the borders of your plot are marked. You are allowed to dig your own hole for the burial of ashes. Water is available at the cemetery to soften the ground when required; use the standpipe just inside the main gate.
